Cleaning up pet stains can be easy when you know what you are doing. That is why Chem-Dry of Annapolis is sharing our 3 most effective ways to remove pet urine and other stains from carpets.
Homemade Solutions
By making a simple cleaning solution at home you can save lots of money. Homemade solutions are typically pretty effective at removing surface stains and odors with very little scrubbing required.
When you are using a homemade solution you will want to spot-check a small area first to test it. Make sure it doesn’t cause your carpet to discolor. When you begin cleaning, blot the area with a towel to first absorb any remaining urine before applying your solution.
As you try to remove the stain, don’t scrub too hard. This can end up pushing the stain further into your carpet fibers. Gently blot the area instead.
Baking Soda And Vinegar
Try saturating the stained section in vinegar. Don’t overdo it, you never want your carpet to become soggy. Add a generous amount of baking soda to the top. You will hear a fizzing, popping sound, this just means that the solution is working. Cover the stain with a small towel and let rest for 1-2 days. After the spot dries entirely scoop up any remaining baking soda, rinse with cool water, blot dry, then vacuum.
Dishwashing Detergent
Add ¼ teaspoon of dishwasher detergent to one cup of lukewarm water. Mix and put your solution in a spray bottle. You can spray this directly on the stain. Towel dry after!
Hydrogen Peroxide
You can create a cleaning solution by adding 4 tablespoons of peroxide with 2 tablespoons of lukewarm water. Put it in a spray bottle with a few drops of dish soap. Spray this on your stain and let it sit for around 10 minutes. You can repeat this process as necessary. Then rinse will cool water, blot to dry, and vacuum!
The Quick Method
Not wanting to make your own cleaning solution? You can buy effective stain remover in stores. Look for Spot Shot, OxiClean, or Resolve.
Regular Professional Cleaning
Trying to keep up with pet stains on your own can be a lot of work. The other problem with this is that spot cleaning only removes stains from the surface of your carpets. Pet urine has the ability to penetrate carpet fibers and soak into the carpet backing and flooring under your carpet. As pet urine dries there are concentrated urine crystals that get left behind. These crystals will release an odor unless professionally removed.
