HOW OFTEN TO CLEAN YOUR COUCH

As the end of summer approaches, we start spending more time indoors, and as a result, more time lounging on our furniture. While the outdoor activities of summer may have distracted us from the spaghetti stain on our couch from a few months earlier, it’s now a constant reminder of just how dirty our upholstered furniture really is.

In fact, your couch is most likely the dirtiest item in your home. Why? Because wiping down our countertops, sweeping and mopping our floors, and cleaning our bathrooms are regularly included on our to-do lists, but cleaning our upholstery is not. Not only that, couches and furniture are where most of the dust in our homes settle.

Why Dirty Furniture Is A Health Hazard

Couches and other upholstered furniture in our home act as giant air filters, trapping dirt and allergens in their soft fibers. While this helps to improve the air quality in our homes for a short time, it doesn’t take long for the fabric fibers to become full of contaminants that can cause considerable health risks.

Think about the amount of time you and your family spend on the couch compared to how often you clean it.

Dust, body oils, spills, and dirty clothes leave behind dirt and allergens on your couch, which are then spread throughout your home as you go about your normal daily activities.

Not to mention the hair, dandruff, feces, urine, and dirt deposited on your furniture by your pets. All of these contaminants can affect indoor air quality and cause health issues if not cleaned regularly and properly.

How Often You Should Have Your Upholstery Cleaned

It’s important to remember that regular vacuuming and spot cleaning is very different than deep furniture cleaning.

Routine surface cleaning can help to remove some of the dirt and harmful particles that are on the surface of your couch. This will help to reduce the surface dirt that can wear down your upholstery fibers over time. Surface cleaning can also help to fade visible surface stains.

However, surface cleaning alone is only a small part of the battle for a clean couch. Deep down within the fibers of your upholstery and cushions allergens. These contaminants cannot be removed without professional cleaning equipment.

In order to maintain a truly healthy home, your upholstery should be professionally cleaned once or twice a year. If you have pets or children, we recommend cleaning your upholstery every 3-4 months.
